Tizzard’s reckon Fiddlerontheroof ‘ticks plenty of boxes’ as the 5-1 shot prepares for Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury

JOE Tizzard reckons Fiddlerontheroof is hitting all the right notes ahead of Saturday’s Ladbrokes Trophy.

The seven-year-old won easily on his reappearance at Carlisle and is among the leading contenders for Newbury’s historic handicap.

The £250,000 race has been won by some of the greats of the sport – including Arkle, Burrough Hill Lad and Denman.

Grade 1 winner Fiddlerontheroof will attempt to add his name to the race’s impressive roll of honour for a yard enjoying a resurgence in form.

The Tizzard horses are back firing on all cylinders after a tough 2020-21 campaign when the stable’s runners were laid low by a virus.

Assistant trainer Joe, who will take over from his dad Colin at the end of the season, told Sun Racing: “The horses are fit and healthy and in great form.

“Long may that continue because last year wasn’t easy – we want to be back competing at the top-level on a regular basis.”

He continued: “I couldn’t be happier with where Fiddlerontheroof is and the Ladbrokes Trophy has been a long-term aim for him.

“His jockey Brendan Powell came down and gave him a school over fences this week and he jumped beautifully.

“He only won once last season but he was ultra-consistent – he ran a lovely race when he was second to Monkfish at Cheltenham.

“He is a progressive, second-season chaser who looks on a good mark, so he ticks plenty of boxes.

“He is pretty versatile as regards ground, he has won on Good to Soft in the past.

“The ground isn’t a worry but like everybody else we wouldn’t mind a drop of rain.”

Fiddlerontheroof is a 5-1 shot with the race sponsors, and he is likely to be joined in the race by stablemates Copperhead (14-1) and Mister Malarky (40-1).

Meanwhile, Tizzard said the yard’s top staying chaser Lostintranslation was “tired” after his win at Ascot on Saturday and that no decision on his next target will be made for “a couple of weeks”.
