THERE were emotional scenes at Ludlow on Wednesday as the last horse tragic Lorna Brooke partnered to win came good again under Immy Robinson.

Garde Ville won for Brooke on April 3, but sadly a week later at Taunton the amateur rider suffered a horror fall from which she later died.

Racing has paid tribute to Brooke, 37, since the news broke on Monday with a minute’s silence before each meeting and the jockeys wearing black armbands.

And yesterday a number of amateur jockeys gathered at Ludlow to mark the loss in their ranks.

It was written in the stars as fellow amateur Robinson managed to ride horse Garde Ville home in the Eddie Mapp Memorial Open Hunters’ Chase.

Robinson carried out an emotional interview after the 9-4 shot won, where she revealed a knot Brooke had tied in the reins was still there.

An emotional Robinson said: “There were two of us riding that horse today.

“When we came into the home straight and we had those line of fences in front of us, I thought I’m not losing this race because he was jumping for fun

“I just knew Lorna would be going long, long and longer and she would not let those boys past us, so I had that in my head.

“I didn’t look too pretty today but I was going to do it for Lorna.”

Brooke had ridden 17 winners during her amateur career

Brooke fell at Taunton when riding for her mum Lady Susan Brooke and was airlifted to hospital.

She was then placed in an induced coma but lost her battle on Sunday night.

A statement from the Injured Jockeys Fund said: “It is with deep sadness that we have to share the tragic news that Lorna Brooke passed away yesterday.

“Her family thank everyone for their kindness in the last ten days, particularly the staff at Southmeads Hospital who were so professional.

“They will be having a private funeral and will hold a celebration of Lorna’s life once Covid-19 restrictions allow.”
