Trainer fined for ‘using inappropriate language and speaking in an aggressive manner’ after altercation with own jockey

TRAINER Gay Kelleway has been fined after an ‘aggressive’ altercation with her OWN jockey.

The incident took place at Southwell on Saturday where her horse Mukha Magic was ridden by apprentice Oisin McSweeney.

Kelleway has trained five winners so far this season

The five-year-old horse could only manage third in the race, but his trainer Kelleway clearly believed McSweeney could have done better.

The pair were called in by the stewards after the race after two fellow riders witnessed an incident between Kelleway and McSweeney in the unsaddling area.

The post-race stewards report read: “An enquiry was held following a report from two riders who rode in the third race and observed an incident
between Gay Kelleway, the trainer and Oisin McSweeney, the rider of Mukha Magic, in the unsaddling area post-race.

“Having heard their evidence, Kelleway was found guilty of Improper Conduct and fined £250, in that she had an altercation with McSweeney, using both inappropriate language and speaking in an aggressive manner towards her rider after the race.”

The race took a while to sort out after a messy finale meant three riders – Kevin Stott, Eoin Walsh and McSweeney – were all called in by the same stewards.

The rest of the report read: “An enquiry was held to consider interference rounding the bend turning into the home straight, when the winner, Ravenscar, ridden by Kevin Stott, interfered with Tigray, placed fifth, ridden by Eoin Walsh, which in turn interfered with Mukha Magic, placed third, ridden by Oisin McSweeney.

“Being a 7Ib Claiming Apprentice, McSweeney was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.

“Stott was cautioned for careless riding as he angled his mount right-handed off the bend when insufficiently clear carrying both Tigray and Mukha Magic off their intended lines.”
