‘Utter madness’ – fury over controversial Kempton race as horse ’causes carnage’ but result still stands

, ‘Utter madness’ – fury over controversial Kempton race as horse ’causes carnage’ but result still stands

PUNTERS hit the roof and TV pundits were left stumped after a horse ’caused carnage’ at the start – but the result stood.

Gold Medal can count himself one of the unluckiest losers of the year after getting clattered by Vape at the start of the six-furlong dash at Kempton last night.

Vape caused carnage when veering wildly and clattering into four other runners – but stewards saw no reason to hold an enquiry, sparking fury from punters

Vape, under apprentice jockey Aidan Keeley, veered sharply left out of the gates and smashed into four rivals.

The collision forced them all off their lines and way out into the centre of the track.

Gold Medal, under Finley Marsh, recovered well and in all likelihood would have won the race had it been a few yards further.

Incredibly, despite the chaos at the start, stewards on the night decided there was no need to review the placings, with 8-1 The Princes Poet declared the winner.

Punters couldn’t believe this as they felt Gold Medal had been hampered greater than the losing margin of a neck and deserved to win the race despite being third past the post.

Respected Racing TV pundit Steve Mellish said: “If the collision happened two furlongs out we wouldn’t even ben talking about whether he got the race.

“He undeniably lost more ground than he was beaten by.

“It’s not right. It’s ridiculous there’s no stewards’ [enquiry], it doesn’t do much for your confidence in the system.”

Those watching at home were left equally bewildered.

One said: “Something is badly wrong here – not to have an enquiry beggars belief.”

Another commented: “Kempton stewards need to take a real good look at themselves – maybe even look for a new career! This is shambolic.”

One post read: “No enquiry? Utter madness.”

While another Twitter user said: “It’s actually become farcical now.”

The British Horseracing Authority stewards’ report read: “Leaving the stalls, Vape, drawn six, ducked sharply left-handed when the rider, upon removing the blindfold did not have both hands on the reins, interfering with Rattling, drawn eight, Porfin (IRE), drawn nine and Gold Medal, drawn 11, taking them notably off their intended lines.

“After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and it had not improved the placing of Vape.”
