Karakhan, the 2-1 favourite, looked to be holding on for victory going to the final hurdle in the two-mile opener at Clonmel on Friday.

Shane Mulcahy had done a brilliant job navigating the Denis Hogan-trained horse round, despite some jumping issues.

But it all came to a head in spectacular fashion at the last.

Karakhan jinked left approaching the flight and ploughed head first through the wing on the side of the hurdle.

It shattered into pieces after contact, with Mulcahy sent flying in the process.

The horse, a five-year-old gelding who has never won, was quickly back on his feet.

Mulcahy lay motionless on the ground before slowly getting back up after the almighty tumble.

Punters were just grateful both were unhurt.

One said: “Oh my God that’s bad I hope both are OK.”

Another commented: “Great to see horse and rider are absolutely fine. That’s the main thing.”

A fellow Twitter user wrote: “Thank God they’re OK.”

The action-packed race saw another faller in 16-1 Thanks God at the last, with 7-2 Saucy Years hitting the deck two flights before.

Bernies Poet, the big 200-1 outsider, unseated her jockey Simon Torrens three out.

Big 20-1 Tommydan was the biggest benefactor of Karakhan’s demise.

Ambrose McCurtin ran out the winner on the Debbie Hartnet-trained horse, with 11-4 General Clermont in second.
