‘We need Carol Vorderman’ – furious trainer stripped of £50,000 win jokes only maths genius can ride his horses

FURIOUS Roger Teal said he needs Carol Vorderman riding his horses – because only she could get her head around the reasons given for him being stripped of a £50,000 win.

Teal was shocked to learn that his horse Chipstead had been demoted to second after being first past the post in last month’s Portland Handicap at Doncaster.

Teal joked he’d need Vorders in the saddle because he couldn’t get his head round the numbers involved in the panel’s finding

Rival trainer Jim Goldie lodged an appeal after his horse, Call Me Ginger, finished second.

Teal won £51,540 with victory in the Class 2 contest while runner-up was worth £24,170 to Scot Goldie.

However, Goldie felt his horse, ridden by Amie Waugh, would have won were it not for being hampered by Teal’s Chipstead.

The race was run on September 11 but the outcome was decided yesterday, October 20, with Goldie retrospectively being awarded victory.

This despite stewards on the day feeling no further action needed to be taken.

Teal said the panel found his horse interfering with Call Me Ginger cost the runner-up three seconds in the race.

Without that three-second interference, Call Me Ginger would have won.

Teal said he could not get his head around how they worked that out – and that the only person who can is racing fanatic Vorders.

Teal fumed: “I can’t see how they think that interference cost the runner-up three seconds.

“Where are they coming from? I can’t see that but I’m not a mathematician.

“In the end I suppose we’ll have to get Carol Vorderman to start riding these horses.”

Funnily enough, Vorders celebrated a big winner with Frankie Dettori at Ascot last weekend.

Teal added: “I’m very disappointed with the verdict and the panel have opened a can of worms with this as other people will be appealing such instances now.

“Chipstead drifted across the path but it wasn’t substantial interference.

“Everyone is in shock. Not one person – jockeys or press – has said we would lose this and I feel the panel were weak in their decision.

“If we have situations like this in the future, I’ll be appealing. I think you can get a soft result now.”

And he added in a statement posted online: “If that’s substantial interference then I’m a f***ing Dutchman.”

James O’Mahony, chairman of the panel who made the ruling, said: “The sectional times for the final furlong indicate Call Me Ginger was travelling faster than Chipstead and the video footage is vital, in particular the rear view, that leads us to conclude there was substantial interference.

“Miss Waugh had to stop moving left to the gap that had closed as a result of the significant drift left by Chipstead.

“She then had to steady and move around to the right, and we accept this involved three seconds of the race.

“The winning margin was a closing short half-length and the distance is not significantly great to outweigh the ground lost by substantial interference.”

This is the second time this week stewards’ decisions have come under fire.

Punters could not believe there was no enquiry to a race at Kempton which saw one horse ’cause carnage’ and affect the outcome.
