Weekend shortlist: Count on Vinnie Lewis in London National slog

WITH two Grade 1 contests and an ultra-competitive handicap, this weekend’s card at Sandown already has the pulse thumping.

The London National is a bit of a minefield, but there’s one lurking under the radar who could take plenty of beating.

Harry Whittington has a big chance of victory in the London National

VINNIE LEWISmay have had his supporters at their Whit’s end last season, but he’s the one to beat in Sandown’s big stamina-sapper on Saturday.

Harry Whittington’s eight-year-old has an endless supply of petrol in his tough-as-teak fuel tank and this 3m5f test should be right up his street.

Winner of the Sussex National at Plumpton in 2018, he’s now just 6lb higher and remains very unexposed over staying trips.

His reappearance at Sedgefield over 3m5f was a very tough ask after 225 days off the track but he ran well to a point, and should strip fitter now.

We know the track suits as he ran a big race over 3m when second to Commodoreback in March and this extra distance will be right up his street.

Sandown’s due some rain this week which will help him as he needs a bit of juice underfoot, and if he gets into a nice rhythm he’ll be tough to catch off what remains a very fair mark.
