Young jockey fighting for his life after being trampled by horses in ‘horrifying’ fall

A JOCKEY is in fighting for his life in hospital after being trampled by horses in a ‘horrifying’ fall.

The whole of US racing is praying for 24-year-old Mauro Cedillo after he smashed into the dirt at Thistledown racecourse in Ohio on Monday.

The jockey was thrown from his horse before being trampled by those running behind

Cedillo was thrown from his mount Spectacular Road when the horse stumbled entering the home turn.

Video showed the jockey apparently travelling well before falling off, with those behind charging over him.

Cedillo’s agent Luis Quinones confirmed the star rider, described as ‘popular and well-liked’, is on a ventilator in intensive care at Cleveland’s Metro Health Medical Centre.

Quinones said: “His uncle did tell me Mauro moved his feet, so that’s a good sign.

“They’ve got him on a ventilator. He has some leg movement.

“His fiancee was there with him and his uncle was there.

“They’re only allowing two people in at a time.

“He’s in the ICU but the doctors really can’t tell us much now, except to say that he is alive and on the ventilator.

“They were talking to his uncle and they don’t want to tell him he’s going to be OK in case something goes south.

“But they said his vitals and everything are looking the right way.

“He has no internal bleeding or anything like that. It’s too early to say much but he’s breathing.”

Cedillo’s dreadful spill came just a few days after racing in Australia was plunged into mourning following the death of jockey Dean Holland.

The 34-year-old died from the injuries he sustained in a fall at Donald racecourse in Victoria.
