Murray Withdraws Due to Abdominal Strain
It's not looking good for Andy Murray just weeks before the US Open. The former New York champion was forced to withdraw from the Canadian Open after suffering an abdominal strain. Murray, 36, had been scheduled to face Italian Jannik Sinner, but the match never happened as Murray apologized to the live crowd watching from the stands.
Murray Expresses Regret and Explains Situation
The Scottish tennis star took to the Toronto court without his racquet and addressed the disappointed fans. "Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to play this evening. I'm really sorry," Murray said. "I feel like I have let you down. I have rarely been in this situation in my career. I feel terrible."
Murray went on to explain that he had a similar issue last year before Wimbledon, but was able to recover in about 10-12 days. He emphasized the importance of not making the injury worse by competing and playing on it. "I need to see how it develops over the coming days and hopefully feel better in a few days. I'm really sorry," Murray added.
Rare Occurrence in Murray's Career
This is only the seventh time in Murray's impressive 18-year professional career that he has conceded a walkover. The last time it happened was before a scheduled clash with then world No.1 Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Masters in May 2022.
US Open Just Around the Corner
The US Open is set to begin on Monday, August 28, and Murray's injury raises concerns about his readiness for the tournament. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are the defending singles champions.
