Brit star Katie Boulter avoids shock US Open disqualification as she plots spot in second week for first time

Katie Boulter narrowly avoided a disqualification at the US Open after she slammed the ball into the crowd in frustration during her comeback win over Wang Yafan. Despite the code violation, Boulter managed to regain her composure and achieve new milestones as she advanced to the third round of the tournament.

Moving onwards and upwards

Boulter's victory not only secured her place in the last 32 of the US Open, but also put her on track to break into the world's top 50 for the first time. This achievement mirrors her performance at Wimbledon earlier this year.

A close call

If Boulter's ball had hit anyone in the crowd, she would have faced immediate disqualification, similar to Novak Djokovic's experience in 2020. Thankfully, her shot missed the fans and landed in the gangway.

Boulter expressed her relief, saying, "The safety of everyone is the most important thing for me. It was completely unintentional, and luckily it wasn't anywhere close to anyone. But for a second I was feeling pretty bad, if I'm honest. Of course, there's a lot of ifs – it would be my worst nightmare, it really would. It was an unfortunate situation, but we moved through, and managed to get a win."

A hard-fought victory

In a grueling match lasting two hours and 21 minutes, Boulter triumphed over Wang with a scoreline of 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Wang, a Chinese qualifier, had been on an 11-match winning streak prior to facing Boulter. Despite blowing three set points in the first set, Boulter's powerful forehand proved decisive in the next two sets.

Boulter's next opponent will be American Peyton Stearns, a match she believes is winnable. Reflecting on her performance, Boulter said, "I am super happy with today. I am very, very proud of myself. I had to dig really deep. I had a few set points in the first set which I wasn't able to convert. She played some really good tennis and I had to really battle and go for it at the same time. I am pleased with my resilience. I think tactically I was trying to be very aggressive and I think I got a little bit tight in the first set. I bounced back in the second set and managed to loosen up."
