British interest in men’s singles OVER as Liam Broady joins Andy Murray and Cam Norrie through Wimbledon exit door

MANCHESTER CITY fan Liam Broady couldn’t replicate the great heights of his football club – but he did bank a whopping £131k.

The 29-year-old became the final British men’s singles player to crash out of Wimbledon on day five despite a gutsy performance over Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.

Liam Broady locked horns with Denis Shapovalov in the third round of Wimbledon on Friday

But the Brit was dumped out the SW19 tournament thanks to a 4-6 6-2 7-5 7-5 defeat

Shapovalov endured a nightmare start but battled back valiantly

He had promised his mum a slap-up meal after claiming the biggest win of his career against No 4 Casper Ruud on Centre Court on Thursday.

And despite his exit, they can dine out on his glittering run at SW19 – where he captured the nation this year.

It was a red-hot start for Broady in front of a packed-out, scorching Court Two who coined a new football-esque “Broaaaady” chant.

He ruffled the feathers of Shapovalov in the first set after capitalizing on a string of cock ups from the Canadian diva to claim it 6-4.

Israel-born 24-year-old Shapovalov was left fuming, shouting towards his team in the stands.

But it seemed to fire a rocket up his jacksie as he went onto wallop Broady after a rapid 6-2 second set before clinching the third and fourth 7-5.

Broady will be remembered, though, for leaving fans in stitches after Thursday’s Centre Court triumph.

He bounced off the walls of Wimbledon’s historic arena, cupping his hands to his ears – ala Jack Grealish, a star of his beloved Manchester City.

He then told his mum to “chill out” as he’s already “won 80 grand” after beating Ruud.

And many thought he could even go all the way – like Pep Guardiola‘s juggernauts winning the treble.

Shapovalov said: “The quality was super high. Great tennis from both of us.

“I’m really happy to get the win. I got pretty lucky sneaking out the third set.

“I would have been in big trouble if Liam had got that.

Liam Broady cut a dejected figure after being dumped at the third-round stage

Denis Shapovalov was the picture of happiness after sending Broady packing

“I’m lucky he played five sets yesterday as well because I’m exhausted now. I can’t imagine how he is feeling.

“I nearly cracked up during the match about that “Broady” chant the crowd is so funny.”

When asked if he relished the Broady faithful giving it large, he replied: “No definitely not.

“I try not to focus on it obviously you’re expecting the crowd are going to be for the countryman.

“I try to focus on myself and focus on what I can do, and tune it out as much as I can. The chant was difficult to tune out though.”
