Fans divided on Nadal conqueror Tiafoe’s sleeveless Australian Open kit… with ‘outgoing’ outfit identical to Azarenka’s

FANS have been left divided over Frances Tiafoe’s Australian Open outfit – but he was not the only one with the unique look.

The American overcame Daniel Altmaier to progress through the first-round of the tournament Down Under.

Frances Tiafoe got people talking with his colourful outfit in Melbourne

Former world No1 Victoria Azarenka also wore an interesting outfit

But Tiafoe, who shot to stardom after a sensational win over Rafael Nadal in the US Open last September, caught the eye for reasons beyond his tennis.

The 24-year-old sported a sleeveless top and shorts that had a flamboyant range of colours splashed in wavy patterns.

The outfit, designed by Nike, shared similarities to the clothes worn by former world No1 Victoria Azarenka.

She came through her first-round open game against Sofia Kenin while also wearing a colourful kit.

Asked about his outfit, Tiafoe reportedly said: “They just told me it was going to be outgoing and sleeveless, and I was like, ‘Cool’…

“It definitely brought attention and that’s what it’s about for a brand, right?”

Tennis watchers on Twitter were split over the design.

One said: “Was someone at Nike tripping when they came up with this design? Frances Tiafoe deserves better.”

Another tweeted: “Not gonna comment on Tiafoe’s outfit. Well, actually I am, what in the ever loving f*** is this?”

But some fans thought the tennis star pulled it off.

One person said: “If Tiafoe wins the Australian Open, I will buy and wear this outfit.”

Another sympathiser: “Frances Tiafoe’s outfit is incredibly hot.”

Tiafoe is now set to take on Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang in the second round.

Elsewhere, Emma Raducanu overcame injury concerns and first-round opponent Tamara Korpatsch to record a straight-set victory on the opening day in Melbourne.

British men’s No1 Cameron Norrie also advanced after he beat teenage French wildcard Luca van Assche.

But it was not all good news for the Brits, with Jack Draper beaten by Nadal while Kyle Edmund lost to Italian Jannik Sinner.

Andy Murray is set to take on Matteo Berrettini on Tuesday.
