Jo Konta still hopeful Wimbledon will go ahead with chiefs to make decision next month

JO KONTA is hopeful Wimbledon will still go ahead.

Tennis chiefs plan to decide next month whether to axe this summer’s grass-court Grand Slam for the first time since the Second World War.

Britain’s Johanna Konta has admitted she wants Wimbledon to still go ahead this summer

All pro tennis has been cancelled until the start of June in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Action at SW19 is due to start on June 29 and British women’s No 1 Konta said: “More than anything it’s important to be hopeful.

“There is nothing wrong with being hopeful.

“Equally, for me right now it’s about not looking too far ahead. We don’t know how it’s going to develop.

“Now we know we are not playing until the beginning of June. That’s the date we are working towards.

“When that changes, if it changes, we’ll react to whatever comes next.”

The French Open has already been moved from May to September, to a slot a week after the US Open.

Konta, 28, is a member of the WTA Players’ Council and believes the decision to cancel tennis worldwide was the right call.

The world No 14 said: “We have breathing space now.

“We can try to thrash out the best course for tournaments, players, everybody, obviously with rankings.

“There is time to try to come up with the best solution possible.

“The whole world is in the same boat — Europe, US and Asia — so everyone is very understanding about what is happening.”

Yet Konta is struggling with the UK lockdown as she is unable to rehabilitate her dodgy knee properly.

She has played seven times since last September’s US Open, when she was troubled by inflammation.

With the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton now shut, she said: “I’m doing what I can to rehabilitate.

“This is not ideal for the knee. I don’t have access to what I need — team, physio, fitness trainer.

“I can’t bring what I need into the flat. I need a leg-press machine for that specific knee exercise.”

Konta has filled her time by making cakes and last night appeared on the Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer on Channel 4. She added: “It was so much fun.”
