Continued Struggles
Concerns are mounting for Nick Kyrgios's tennis future as the Australian tennis player has pulled out of the upcoming US Open in New York. The 28-year-old has only played in one ATP Tour since October of last year and has not participated in any of the four major tournaments this year.
Injuries and Setbacks
Kyrgios, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2022, cited a wrist ligament injury for withdrawing from this year's Championships right before they began. This is not the first setback he has faced recently as he failed to make the main draw of the Australian Open in January due to a knee procedure.
Uncertain Return
There is currently no timeline for Kyrgios's return to the court. While he is signed up for various exhibition matches, he will have to rely on his protected ranking status to compete at the top level.
Replacements and Exits
In addition to Kyrgios, Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany has also withdrawn from the US Open. The two players have been replaced by Argentines Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzman.
A Different Path
In a recent statement, Kyrgios expressed his doubts about playing tennis into his 30s like legends Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. He attributed his skepticism to his lifestyle of "drinking and partying" and emphasized that he has no intention of playing until an older age.
