Novak Djokovic could play in Australian Open despite anti-vax stance with government set to perform visa U-turn

THE AUSTRALIAN government may have opened the door for Novak Djokovic to play Down Under in January 2023.

Reports in Oz claim a decision has been taken in the corridors of power to allow the Serbian superstar back in the country should he apply for a visa.

Novak Djokovic could play at the 2023 Australian Open after a visa U-turn by the government

There is no official confirmation yet but the rules have changed in recent weeks.

And incoming travellers do not need to provide proof of a Covid vaccination record anymore.

If Djokovic can come in, then it would be highly controversial both in the tennis world and across the country.

Djokovic was sensationally detained on arrival at Melbourne Airport in January after a Border Force official cancelled the visa he had been granted ahead of boarding his plane from the Middle East.

The 21-time Slam champion won an appeal to have his visa reinstated.

But he was later booted out by the immigration department on “health and good order grounds”.

It is understood officials felt his presence as an unvaccinated person and his position on Covid vaccination may cause “civil unrest” among Australian anti-vaxxers.

The former world No1 is banned from the country for three years.

And that would clearly have to be overturned so he can return to Melbourne Park at least one more time.

Djokovic did not play at the US Open because he was unable to secure a visa to travel to the United States as he is unjabbed.

SunSport understands Oz bosses are privately hopeful that Djokovic will be able to play in the New Year.

The 35-year-old beat Nick Kyrgios to win the Wimbledon title in July but he is one major behind Rafa Nadal in the men’s overall stakes.
