The Swiss superstar had been targeting a return to the court for months and had even vowed to compete at Wimbledon one last time.

“I wish this day would have never come. It’s a sad day for me personally and for sports around the world.

“It’s been a pleasure but also an honour and privilege to share all these years with you, living so many amazing moments on and off the court.

“We will have many more moments to share together in the future, there are still lots of things to do together, we know that.

“For now, I truly wish you all the happiness with your wife, Mirka, your kids, your family and enjoy what’s ahead of you.

“I’ll see you in London @LaverCup.”

The rivals will become teammates when they take to the court at the O2 Arena next week to represent Team Europe at the Laver Cup.

But, it might not be the last time the two compete together.

According to ESPN, Real Madrid want to host a one-off tennis match which will see Federer take on Nadal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Renovations are currently taking place at the iconic stadium which will see a retractable pitch installed to enable basketball games and tennis matches to take place.

Real Madrid have not yet confirmed a date for the huge event, which will likely double the record for the largest crowd to watch a tennis match.

Fans took to Twitter on Friday to react to the news, with one writing: “If it happens consider my tickets already booked.”

Another added: “Make this happen.”

A third said: “100% going if it actually happens.”

While a fourth wrote: “Manifesting this.”
