SERENA WILLIAMS’ dream of a farewell US Open victory were ended on Friday night.
The 40-year-old tennis icon was beaten by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in a marathon match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Serena went down 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 in just over three hours in what is probably her last ever match.
The 23-time grand slam champion announced her retirement from the sport at the start of August.
She was desperate for one last run at grand slam glory and tying Margaret Court’s record of 24.
And the 40-year-old had tennis fans believing after her thrilling win over No 2 seed Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday.
But she couldn’t pull off any more heroics on Friday night despite an almighty effort as her tournament and probably career came to a close.
