Oscar Otte battled back into it after losing the first set

Murray impressed in a solid fist set, closing it out 6-3 with his second break of serve against his more inconsistent opponent.

And when the Scot led 3-1 in the second set it seemed Otte was edgy.

But the qualifier rattled off five straight games as Murray appeared to decline physically, Otte taking the set 6-4.

Otte continued to look the more composed player in the third, despite struggling to keep his feet on the slippery grass, again taking the set 6-4 as Murray missed drop shots and played more passively.

But Murray looked steadier and more assertive in the fourth, competing well at 2-2 and then raising his game after a break to put the roof on.

He broke to build a 5-3 lead, lost his serve nervously, but then produced arguably his most rousing game of the match to break back immediately to 15 and level the match at two sets apiece.

Murray held firmly to open the decider, broke dominantly to 15 and then grafted out a tense third game for a 3-0 final set lead.

And he showed all his old gymnastic guile around the court to hold on again in a lengthy seventh game, moving 5-2 up and breaking Otte in in the next game for another epic victory.
