Wimbledon’s iconic Centre Court packed with fans in first full stadium since coronavirus lockdown began

WIMBLEDON’S Centre Court has become the first outdoor stadium in the UK to be at maximum capacity since the coronavirus lockdown began in March 2020.

The iconic arena has been packed for today’s quarter-final ties, including the women’s singles clash between Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka.

Wimbledon is at full capacity as a test event for the government’s Events Research Programme.

Social distancing and masks are not required for spectators while they enjoy the tennis in their seats.

Court No1 at SW19 will also be at maximum capacity until the tournament finishes on Sunday.

Nearly 15,000 fans have flocked to Centre Court to watch today’s match between Jabeur and Sabalenka, with the latter winning 6-4, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals.

Many celebs were also in attendance, including Ant McPartlin and girlfriend Anne-Marie Corbett.

Grime star Stormzy was sitting behind the couple – and he wasn’t the only musician soaking up the atmosphere.

Scottish sensation Lewis Capaldi enjoyed Sabalenka’s stellar performance with comedian and Arsenal fan Jack Whitehall.

And there was also room for X Factor icon Olly Murs and Bafta-winning actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

While celebs can visit Wimbledon again, they won’t get to see a British star in action after Emma Raducanu, 18, retired from her last 16 clash with Ajla Tomljanovic.

And they won’t get a glimpse of American teen Coco Gauff either following her loss to 2018 champion Angelique Kerber.

But one star who will be on show is Novak Djokovic as he reached the quarter-finals with a crushing win against Cristian Garin.

All UK stadiums will welcome back full crowds from Monday, July 19 – PM Boris Johnson has confirmed.
