John Daly forced to apologise after telling fans to down a bottle of vodka a day to battle coronavirus

JOHN DALY spent his latest birthday the same way as many others – by issuing an apology for his outrageous behaviour.

Daly, who turned 54 on Tuesday, was forced to backtrack over his ‘advice’ to tackle coronavirus by drinking a bottle of vodka a day!

Golfer John Daly has apologised over comments he made encouraging people to drink vodka daily

Golf’s Wild Thing said his remarks – made in a video for members of President Trump’s golf clubs around the world – were strictly tongue in cheek.

He said he was surprised by the backlash that caused, with critics pointing out that the World Health Organisation say drinking alcohol can increase the risk of contracting Covid 19.

Daly told a Golf.com webcast: “I didn’t mean to hurt anybody’s feelings. Hell, I was just doing it for fun, just try to get some laughs in the tough times we’re going through.

“Shame we can’t have any humour in this country or this world anymore, you know, without somebody busting your you know what.

“We all need some fun right now. We all need a sense of humour right now.

“We pray for the people who have fallen and pray for this virus to get over. I didn’t mean any harm by it.”

In the video, former Open and USPGA champion Daly – who has battled booze and gambling addictions throughout his career – is pictured holding a bottle of vodka, and announces these days he only has one drink a day.

He says: “Just drink one of these a day. You know, sippy, sippy on a McDonald’s Diet Coke ya know, wash it down pretty good.

“Never have a hangover. And that’s the way you kill this coronavirus, I believe.

“But y’all be safe, take care and hopefully, we’ll be getting back to the things we do best pretty soon.”

Daly, 54, is a time-time Major winner having won the PGA Championship and The Open

The Wild Thing did get a laugh as he recalled his first meeting with Tiger Woods, when they played a practice round during a junior tournament in Daly’s home state of Arkansas.

Woods was suitably impressed when Daly lashed a five iron over 220 yards, hitting his ball so hard it split apart.

Daly added: “Luckily, I got to replace the ball. I only beat him by three shots that day. He was just 13!”
