Cold snap set to disrupt racing into next week with Ayr and Ludlow latest to suffer from snow, ice and rain

THE RACING fixture list is set to be disrupted further into next week.

Meetings at Ayr and Ludlow are the latest to come under threat due to the continued cold snap.

High-profile fixtures at Chepstow, Cheltenham, Exeter and Ayr have all been lost in recent days.

But Tuesday’s action at Ludlow and Wednesday’s at Ayr must both pass inspections.

Ayr were forced into a last minute abandonment just yesterday – only 25 minutes before the first race.

And conditions are yet to improve with the course reporting freezing temperatures of -6 degrees.

The weather is not scheduled to get much above freezing for the next couple of days either and an inspection has been called for 7am on Monday

Clerk of the course Graeme Anderson tweeted: “With below freezing forecast for next few days there is very little chance of improvement.”

Ludlow will also hold on an inspection early on Monday morning, prior to Tuesday’s card.

The track hope warmer conditons on Sunday and Monday may mean they escape yet another cancellation.

Simon Sherwood, clerk at the Shropshire track, rates Ludlow’s chances 50-50 at present.

Leopardstown managed to avoid the worst of the weather and passed a Sunday morning inspection ahead of racing this afternoon.

The recently canned Welsh Grand National is set for round two at Chepstow on Saturday.

The main races from Cheltenham’s cancelled New Year’s Day fixture are also set to be run at Kempton on Saturday.
