Amateur boxing is often practiced at school, college, or university. This type of boxing includes sparring sessions with padded gloves and without any protection. Usually amateur boxing competitions consist of three rounds of five minutes each. Olympic boxing is done at the Olympics. Boxers are required to wear international standards-compliant protective gear. The competition lasts approximately three minutes for each round. Olympic boxing has only two styles, Light Flyweight vs Heavyweight.

Boxing is based on the following skills:

  • Punching techniques
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • Movement of the body
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Spares

Punching Techniques

There are seven types of punches available: Left Hook and Right Hook, Cross, Cross, Straight, Underhand, Overhand, Cross, Straight, Cross, Straight, Cross, Straight, and Overhand. Each punch comes with its own technique. Some punches require greater strength than others. An example of this is an uppercut, which requires tremendous force. On the contrary, a straight punch takes less power but is faster than most punches.

There are many combinations of punches. These are combinations which combine several punches in order to achieve a specific goal. An entire combination could have several parts. For example, a combination of a left and right hook will result in damage to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

To defend himself from being attacked, a boxer uses his entire body. He does this by using his legs, arms, elbows, hands, knees and feet.

Legs

Boxers must use their legs to defend themselves against kicks. He raises his leg when he is hit with a kick and then moves away from the opponent. If the attack comes from the front, then he bends his knees to avoid being kicked on the side. However, if the attack comes from behind, he stands up straight and blocks the kick with his foot.

Elbows

Because they cause great pain, elbow strikes are extremely effective. An elbow strike can be delivered either directly or indirectly. Directly means that you hit your opponent with your forearm while indirectly means that you hit him with another part of your arm.

Hands

Boxers use the power of their hands to block any incoming blows. To do so, they raise their fists above their head and move them towards the direction of the attack. They then touch the attackers fist.

Knees

To absorb the impact of a punch to the stomach, abdomen, or chest, boxers should bend their knees. Defense purposes are often served by knee strikes.

Feet

When attacked, a boxer should step back and deliver counter-attacks. This way, he can gain distance between himself and his opponent. Additionally, boxers need to maintain their balance when they counter-attack.

Stances

Boxing effectively requires a boxer to have a good stance. How he defends his self will depend on how he stances. It defines where he faces his opponent and how he positions his body. Boxers have many stances to choose from. Here are some of the more popular ones:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Body Movement

In order to win a fight, a boxer must move around his opponent. This involves changing positions, speed, rhythm and timing.

Rotation

Boxers rotate their arms when they throw a punch. Different types of punches require different speeds for the rotation.

Combinations

The effectiveness of a combination depends on the timing of each individual punch. A combination that works well starts with strong punches and ends with weak ones is a winning combination.

Spare parts

Sparring is an exercise session to improve boxing skills. A sparring session is where a boxer trains both his mind and his body. Sparring, in conclusion, is about learning how to fight and not getting hurt.

Learning to box takes dedication and patience. You need to train hard and long in order to become a better boxer.
