Boxing’s fundamental skills are:

  • Punching techniques
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • Moving your body
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Spare parts

Punching Techniques

There are seven types. Each punch comes with its own technique. Some punches require more force than others. An uppercut, for instance, requires tremendous strength. On the other hand, a straight punch requires less power but it is faster than other punches.

There are many combinations of punches. These are combinations which combine several punches in order to achieve a specific goal. One combination can have many parts. A left hook followed with a right-cross will cause injury to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

A boxer uses his body to protect himself against attacks. He does this by using his legs, arms, elbows, hands, knees and feet.

Legs

Boxers should use the legs to protect themselves against kicks. When he receives a kick, he raises his leg and moves away from the attacker. To avoid being kicked on the sides, he bends at his knees when the attacker strikes from the front. If the attack is from the side, he will bend his knees to avoid being kicked on the side.

Elbows

Elbow strikes are very powerful because they inflict great pain. You can either deliver an elbow strike directly, or indirectly. Directly means that your opponent is hit with your forearm. However, indirectly means that your elbow strike is delivered with another part or your arm.

Hands

Boxers use their hands to block incoming blows. To do this, they raise their fists higher than their heads and move their arms in the direction that the attack is coming. Then they make contact with the attacker’s fist.

Knees

To absorb the impact of a punch to the stomach, abdomen, or chest, boxers should bend their knees. Defense purposes are often served by knee strikes.

Feet

A boxer should not be afraid to respond to an attack. This will help him gain distance from his opponent. Additionally, boxers need to maintain their balance when they counter-attack.

Stances

In order to box effectively, a boxer needs to establish a stance. The way he defends himself will be determined by his stance. It determines his position and the direction he will face. Boxers can take many different stances. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Move your body

A boxer must be able to move around his opponent in order to win a fight. This means changing your speed, position and rhythm.

Rotation

Rotating his arm to increase the puncher’s reach is a key part of boxing. Depending on the type and size of punch, the speed at which the rotation takes place varies.

Combinations

The timing of each punch determines the effectiveness of a combination. A combination that works well starts with strong punches and ends with weak ones is a winning combination.

Sparring

Sparring is an exercise session to improve boxing skills. Boxers learn to train their mind and bodies during sparring sessions. The goal of sparring is to learn to fight, and not to get hurt.

To sum it all, boxing requires patience and dedication. To become a better fighter, you have to train hard and continue to work.
