Arsenal boss Arteta urges Emile Smith Rowe to ditch modest act and believe in ability as he challenges him to score more

MIKEL ARTETA thinks Emile Smith Rowe is too modest for his own good and needs to have more belief in his ability.

The young Arsenal midfielder scored the only goal of the game for England’s Under-21 team on Andorra on Monday night.

Smith Rowe opened the scoring in Arsenal’s 3-1 over Spurs last month

And Gunners boss Arteta is convinced the sky is the limit for the 21-year-old who has played a key role in the recent Arsenal revival.

He says: “Emile needs to believe in how good he is because sometimes I have to encourage him to try the things that he’s capable of doing.

“It’s still very early in his career but he’s a joy to work with and we’re really happy to have him in our team.

“He is capable of scoring more goals and I think he has the intention and the ambition to do that.

“We ask the players to do the things they can achieve and I am sure that Emile can improve that aspect of his game.

“He’s working on it almost every day and asking all the right questions. He’s getting better because he has a real hunger to succeed.”

Arteta also ruled out the possibility of allowing Gabriel Martinelli to go out on loan in January to achieve more game time.

The young Brazilian started the first two games of the season while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang recovered from Covid but hasn’t featured in any of the subsequent League games.

Arteta explained: “We have a lot of options with Gabi and we need to find the right space for him to grow within the squad.

“We sometimes forget his age, what he has already done and where he is in his career because it can generate frustration when expectations are not very realistic.

“The injuries he’s suffered have been big setbacks and I don’t know if he’s going to be available for Crystal Palace on Monday because he unfortunately got a minor injury last week.

“But I am very happy with Gabi and we are not thinking about loaning him out or anything like that.”
