Second points deduction
Reading Football Club has been hit with a second points deduction this season by the English Football League (EFL), plunging them further into crisis.
Financial breaches
The Royals started the League One campaign with a one-point deficit after being found guilty of breaching league financial regulations. Now, they have been hit with another three-point deduction for failing to comply with an order to deposit an amount equal to 125% of the club's monthly wage bill into a designated account by September 12.
Relegation woes
Last season, Reading was relegated from the Championship after having six points deducted. With this latest deduction, they now sit in 21st place with only two points.
Club statement
A statement from Reading Football Club acknowledged the penalty and stated that owner Mr. Dai failed to meet the commission's order. The club also mentioned their ongoing efforts to secure stable external investment to avoid future cash flow complications.
EFL statement
In an official statement, the EFL expressed disappointment and frustration with Reading's ownership for failing to meet their ongoing obligations under EFL Regulations. The league reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing its rules in all appropriate circumstances.
New manager
Reading appointed former Southampton boss Selles as their new manager over the summer. They had their transfer embargo lifted in July, which had been in place since 2021.
League One performance
Reading's League One campaign has been struggling so far, with two wins and four losses. The points deduction further complicates their chances of a successful season.
