Nermina Pieters, the wife of ex-Burnley and Netherlands defender Erik Pieters, has courageously announced that she is currently fighting breast cancer. The 33-year-old shared the heartbreaking news in a poignant post on social media earlier this week.
A Shocking Diagnosis
Nermina, a former showjumper, revealed on Instagram, "And just like that my life changed forever. A few months ago I felt a lump in my left breast and I decided to see a GP who didn't seem overly concerned. After some convincing from my mum, I decided to investigate it further as the lump was getting sore and growing."
On July 10th, Nermina received the devastating diagnosis of early-stage aggressive breast cancer. She expressed her emotions, saying, "My heart was broken, I was scared and I had so many questions… I'm healthy and fit, so how is this possible for someone of my age? But one question scared me the most and it makes me upset even writing it down – 'Will I see my little princess grow up?'"
With the support of her loved ones, especially her husband Erik, Nermina is facing this harrowing journey head-on. She shared, "I'm in very good hands and I'm positive, and I am forever grateful for my husband, our families, and my friends who have been with me the last weeks. Whenever I look into my little girl's eyes I know I have to be strong and that I will do anything and everything to get through this."
Raising Awareness
Nermina hopes that by opening up about her battle with breast cancer, she can encourage other young women to prioritize their health. She shared, "I didn't know if and how to share this with the world but I do know that I want to bring awareness to young women like me. Always listen to your gut feeling, and for anyone going through this right now – I'm sending you love and strength."
The news of Nermina's diagnosis has garnered an outpouring of support from her nearly 80,000 followers. Messages of healing, love, and strength have flooded in, with one follower saying, "Healing energy from me. You shine bright. You can fight it." Another commented, "So sorry to hear this, Nermina, you are strong and beautiful and powerful…you will get through this storm just fine."
