Referee Darren England Sticks to His Decision Despite VAR Check
During Aston Villa's thrilling win over Crystal Palace, referee Darren England made a rare refereeing decision that left fans in disbelief.
England initially pointed to the penalty spot, deeming that Villa striker Ollie Watkins had been fouled by Chris Richards. However, he was called over to the pitchside monitor for a VAR check.
After a lengthy stoppage, England surprised everyone by sticking to his original decision, making it the first time this season that a Premier League referee went against VAR and stuck with his call.
Fans React to the Unusual Decision
Fans took to social media to express their astonishment at England's decision. One fan tweeted, "Darren England sent to the monitor by his VAR team and sticks with his original decision. Only Palace."
Another fan praised England, saying, "Finally a referee who sticks with his decision when incompetent VAR tries to overrule. Fair-play Darren England."
A third supporter expressed curiosity about the conversation between England and the VAR, stating, "I need to hear the 5-minute long conversation Darren England had with the VAR immediately."
Yet another fan couldn't recall the last time a referee didn't overturn a VAR screen review, saying, "Had to be Darren England against us, didn't it."
Villa Seal the Victory
After the penalty decision, Douglas Luiz converted from the spot to give Villa the lead deep into stoppage time. In the 11th added minute, Leon Bailey secured a 3-1 comeback win for the hosts.
Crystal Palace had taken the lead with Odsonne Edouard's goal in the 87th minute. However, Jhon Duran's equalizer and Villa's late heroics turned the game around.
