Leonardo Bonucci Reveals He Turned Down £100m Premier League Transfer

Juventus legend Leonardo Bonucci has opened up about a potential move to Manchester City, admitting that he was "close" to joining the Premier League club in 2016. City were prepared to make him the most expensive defender in the world at the time, offering almost £100 million to Juventus. However, Bonucci ultimately decided to stay with the Italian club.

Heart Over Money

Reflecting on his decision, Bonucci stated, "Being managed by Guardiola would have been a great achievement because he would have improved me, but I can't complain because I won many trophies, individual awards, and the Euros. I always let my heart dictate me, that's why I stayed at Juventus."

Praising John Stones

Although Bonucci did not join Manchester City, he had high praise for the player who was signed in his place, John Stones. Bonucci described Stones as a leader, a technical player, and a "nasty defender." He also acknowledged that Stones has room to improve and believes he is one of the best defenders in the world.

New Challenge with Union Berlin

Since leaving Juventus, Bonucci now plays for Union Berlin in the German Bundesliga. Despite facing a new challenge with the club, which is currently just one point above the relegation zone, Bonucci is embracing the opportunity to continue his career in Germany.

Manchester City signed John Stones from Everton in 2016.
