Premier League Cult Hero Matty Etherington Sacked by League Two Strugglers in Brutal Statement

Colchester United Fires Manager Matty Etherington

Colchester United has made the decision to sack manager Matty Etherington following their 1-0 defeat to Gillingham. This disappointing result leaves the team languishing in 22nd place in League Two.

Etherington, 42, took over as manager in October, replacing Ben Garner. He had previously been coaching Colchester's Under-21 side. During his tenure, Etherington oversaw 16 games as boss, initially on an interim basis and then full-time. The team won five, drew one, and lost 10.

A short statement from Colchester United confirmed Etherington's departure: "Following this afternoon's defeat against Gillingham, Colchester United have relieved Matty Etherington of his duties as Head Coach. The club would like to thank Matty for his time in charge of the first team. No further comment will be made at this time."

Third Consecutive Loss for Colchester

Colchester United suffered their third consecutive loss with a 1-0 defeat to Gillingham, courtesy of Scott Malone's 54th-minute goal. Prior to this, they had fallen 5-3 to AFC Wimbledon and 1-0 to MK Dons.

Etherington's Response

In a post-match interview before his sacking, Etherington acknowledged the team's poor run of results: "I'm fully aware of the situation we're in and the run of results that we're on. I won't shirk away from anyone and I'll keep doing the job to the best of my ability. The results haven't been good enough and I get that. I believe in working a certain way and I believe in my principles as a person and I'll keep being me."

Etherington's Previous Stints as Manager

Before his time at Colchester United, Etherington briefly managed Peterborough as caretaker boss in February 2022. He then took on the Crawley job in November of the same year but was unexpectedly sacked after just three games.

Premier League Career

Prior to his managerial career, Etherington enjoyed a successful playing career in the Premier League, representing Tottenham, West Ham, and Stoke. He retired from professional football in 2014.
