Man Utd icon Paul Scholes hits back at De Gea critics and says club would be in ruins if it wasn’t for under-fire keeper

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes has urged fans to back under-fire goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Spaniard has been the subject of enormous criticism this week, following his latest costly blunders in last weekend’s 3-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea.

The Spaniard was at fault as Manchester United were swept aside by Chelsea at Wembley

De Gea, 29, was particularly at fault for the Blues’ second goal, when he allowed Mason Mount’s trickling shot to somehow squirm through his grasp and into the net.

And it was by no means the first time that United’s No1 has erred this season, having given away cheap goals against Tottenham, Everton and Watford.

But Red Devils legend Scholes, who played alongside De Gea for 18 months before retiring in 2013, has taken to social media to defend his former team-mate.

He wrote: “Yep, he’s having a bad time…

“But without him Utd wouldn’t have finished in the top 10 the last 6 years… he’ll be back!”

While Scholes, 45, has backed the former Atletico Madrid stopper, even manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appeared to be losing patience at the weekend.

The Norwegian said: “Obviously, everyone has to perform.

“Everyone has a chance to stake a claim in the team when they play.

Sergio Romero had played in every round of the FA Cup prior to Sunday

“David knows he should have saved the second goal, that’s over now and we have to look forward to Wednesday.”

There has even been talk that De Gea could be dropped for backup Sergio Romero, when the Red Devils take on West Ham United this evening.

And boss Solskjaer, 47, is set for face-to-face talks with impressive loan star Dean Henderson, following his return from Sheffield United next week.
