Nottingham Forest 1 Liverpool 0: Jurgen Klopp’s side flop again after Dean Henderson heroics gives his side huge win

TAIWO Awoniyi came back to haunt Jurgen Klopp as he inspired a shock win for Nottingham Forest.

The Nigerian spent six years at Anfield and was loaned out seven times.

Awoniyi scored the only goal of the game for the hosts

Awoniyi netted his third Premier League goal of the season

Liverpool were denied by Forest keeper Henderson on a number of occasions

The English shot-stopper had a stunning game for Forest

And he never made a senior appearance for Liverpool

But he led Forest to a memorable victory at the City Ground to show Klopp what he was missing.

Forest may have started the day bottom of the table, but they used a rocking Trentside atmosphere to produce their performance of the season.

But Forest needed an incredible late save from Dean Henderson who got down one handed to keep out Virgil van Dijk’s stoppage time header.

And then he did it AGAIN to keep out Mo Salah.

Boss Steve Cooper said Forest would have to be ‘near perfect’ to beat Liverpool – and they were.

They created a string of chances but had to wait to the 65th minute before opening the scoring.

And it was Awoniyi – who had frustrated Liverpool all day – who was in the right place at the right time.

His first effort hit the post, but he made of netting the rebound.

But the player remembered his Premier League roots – and there was a muted celebration from the man who Cooper knew from his days at the Anfield Academy.

Forest paid what was a club record £17million for Awoniyi in the summer – and he showed why Cooper wanted him.

Liverpool – without an away win this season – looked strangely off the pace as they searched for a third successive win to rekindle their title bid.

But they failed to make the most of their chances with van Dijk caught in two minds when he was presented with a first half header.

Sub Trent Alexander-Arnold almost levelled with six minutes left but keeper Dean Henderson produced an excellent save.

Forest responded and almost made it two when Ryan Yates forced Alisson into a vital save.

More to follow.
