Nottingham Forest Seal £9.5m Deal for World Cup Winner Montiel

Forest land World Cup hero

Nottingham Forest have successfully secured a £9.5 million deal with Sevilla to acquire the services of Gonzalo Montiel, the Argentinian right-back and penalty shootout star. Montiel, who became a legend in Argentina after scoring the decisive penalty in last year's World Cup final, underwent a medical on Monday. Forest manager Steve Cooper is also looking to add another Argentine, Nicolas Dominguez from Bologna, to his squad.

Penalty master

Montiel's history of penalty prowess makes him a valuable asset to Forest. Besides his World Cup-winning penalty, he also scored the decisive spot-kick in last season's Europa League final for Sevilla against Roma. His recent performance in Sevilla's defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Super Cup final showcased his continued composure from the spot.

Disillusionment at Sevilla

Despite having three years left on his current contract, Montiel's role at Sevilla has diminished, leading to his desire for a fresh start. He was left out of the squad for their victory against Las Palmas and only played for a limited time against Manchester City. Montiel has made 72 appearances for Sevilla since signing in 2021, but has been disappointed with being used as a substitute.

Chasing a Premier League challenge

Meanwhile, Dominguez, who is in the final year of his Bologna contract, is eager to prove himself in the Premier League. The midfielder, who has been capped 11 times by Argentina, has declined any offers for an extension and desires a new challenge after more than 100 appearances in Serie A.

Forest's recent performances

After starting their campaign with a 2-1 loss against Arsenal, Forest secured their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United, thanks to a late goal by Chris Wood. Their next match will take them to Old Trafford to face a struggling Manchester United side on Saturday.
