Multiple Rape Allegations
A Premier League footballer, who remains unnamed, has been released under investigation after being arrested on suspicion of raping three separate women. The alleged attacks took place between April 2021 and July 2022. The footballer was due to answer bail this month, but the date was pushed back for a third time.
Release Under Investigation
When a suspect is released under investigation, there is no specified date for their return to the police station. The footballer, who represented his country at the 2022 World Cup, was arrested last July after a police operation at a residence in North London.
Alleged Victims
The first alleged victim, a woman in her 20s, claimed she was raped during a trip to the Mediterranean in June. She reportedly left the five-star resort where she was staying and returned home, showing photos of bruises she claimed were a result of the alleged attack. After the initial arrest, two more allegations from April and June 2021 were made, but the June accusation was later dropped. In February 2023, a third woman came forward with allegations that occurred a year prior.
Club Suspension
Despite the ongoing investigation, the footballer has not been suspended by his club. The club has chosen to let the investigation take its course before making any decisions regarding the player's future.
Police Statement
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: "No further action will be taken in relation to the alleged offense in June 2021 because the relevant legislation had not yet come into effect at the time it is said to have occurred. This has been explained to the complainant who continues to be supported by officers."
The footballer has been bailed until August 2023 and has been released under investigation while further inquiries are carried out.
