F1 considers radical format change slammed by Sebastian Vettel

Introduction of Reverse Sprint Grid

Formula One bosses are contemplating a major format change by introducing a reverse sprint grid, a move that has been criticized by Sebastian Vettel as "bulls***." The CEO of Formula One, Stefano Domenicali, believes this change is necessary to prevent the sport from stagnating.

Current Sprint Race Format

The current sprint race format was implemented in 2021.

Vettel's Disapproval

Sebastian Vettel has previously expressed his disapproval of the idea of reversing the grid. Calling it "complete bullshit," he believes it is the wrong approach for the sport.

Proposed Changes

Facing concerns that the current format lacks excitement, Formula One bosses are open to considering reverse grid sprint races. Team bosses have begun informal discussions about potentially switching the top ten or even shuffling the entire order from back to front.

Fan Disinterest

The recent United States GP Sprint race failed to captivate fans, as ticket sales indicated a significant drop in demand. This lack of interest has prompted the need for potential changes to the format.

Criticism from Hamilton and Wolff

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff have also voiced their criticism of reversing grids. Hamilton stated that those who proposed this idea lack understanding, while Wolff believes it goes against the purity of competition that Formula One is known for.
