Michael Schumacher’s Hometown Set to be Demolished

Kerpen-Manheim, Germany, to be Flattened for Coal Mine

Michael Schumacher's hometown of Kerpen-Manheim in western Germany is facing a tragic fate. The small village, located just 20 miles outside of Cologne, is set to be completely torn down to make way for Germany's largest open-pit coal mine, the Hambach surface mine. Despite a plan to phase out coal by 2029, the destruction is scheduled to begin in 2024.

Only Three Structures Will Remain

Although the village will be demolished, three structures will be spared. The St. Albanus and Leonhardus church, along with Schumacher's childhood home, which has been restored by his brother Ralf, will continue to stand. Additionally, the legendary Erftlandring go-kart track, where the F1 legend honed his skills, will remain intact. The track is now used to discover and promote young German drivers.

A Symbol of Schumacher's Success

The surviving infrastructure in Kerpen-Manheim showcases the positive impact of Schumacher's success. The area also holds sentimental value for the Schumacher family, as it is where Michael and his wife, Corinna, got married in 1995. However, their first home together is no longer standing.

Kerpen-Manheim in Ruins

With only 12 residents remaining, Kerpen-Manheim has become a ghost town. Overgrown roads and boarded-up houses dominate the landscape as the village awaits its inevitable demolition. The abandonment of the town has led to its gradual deterioration over the years.

Update on Michael Schumacher

Since his tragic skiing accident in 2013, Michael Schumacher has remained out of the public eye. In the 2021 Netflix documentary "Schumacher," his wife Corinna revealed that he is "different, but here." However, F1 journalist Roger Benoit recently stated that Schumacher's health battle is "a case without hope," delivering a blow to fans.
