Alcohol Free to add fizz to red-hot Falmouth Stakes at July Festival with Sussex Stakes on Andrew Balding’s radar

ALCOHOL Free is set to add some fizz to next week’s Moet July Festival at Newmarket.

Andrew Balding’s Royal Ascot winner is on course for the Falmouth Stakes after her Coronation Stakes victory.

Alcohol Free stormed home to win the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot

The Kingsclere handler was over the moon as she made up for her luckless effort in the 1000 Guineas on the biggest stage of all.

And if all goes well at Newmarket, Balding is eyeing up a clash with the boys in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

He said: “She seems to have come out of Ascot very well, she’s in great form.

“It was a big relief when she delivered, we thought we had some unfinished business after the Guineas and she showed why we think so highly of her.

“The plan is now to go for the Falmouth Stakes. She had the option of the July Cup, but we don’t need to change trip so let’s stick to what we know.

“It’s looking like a good race compared to recent years so we’ll have to be at our best again.”

Lady Bowthorpe, Mother Earth, Primo Bacio and Saffron Beach could all line up against Balding’s two-time Group 1 winner.

But if she conquers the fillies again, Balding hopes to send her to Goodwood for a clash with the big guns.

He added: “If Newmarket goes to plan and she runs well we’ll then go to the Sussex I think, that’s what we hope to do.

“She’s shown she’s up to this top level and why it’s always a hot race you have to be in it to win it.”

Meanwhile Ed Walker is to reroute his crack sprinter Starman to the July Cup after rain forced them to miss the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot.

The four-year-old is vying for favouritism in the Group 1 with Oxted and Dream Of Dreams.

Walker said: “Ascot was very frustrating with the weather, especially for Starman. We had it in mind for ages and sadly it was a bog.

“But we probably would have gone to Newmarket after anyway so it’s not the end of the world.

“We couldn’t be happier with him, his work has been fantastic and I hope he’ll improve for his York run too, even if it was a while ago.”
