British Racecourse Devastated by Storm Henk Flooding

Racecourse Left Submerged as Storm Surge Hits

A picturesque British racecourse has been completely destroyed after being flooded during the recent storm surge caused by Storm Henk. Huntingdon racecourse in Cambridgeshire was left almost entirely underwater when the nearby Alconbury Brook burst its banks.

Loss of Biggest Race and Race Against Time

The devastation at Huntingdon racecourse has been ongoing for weeks. The track lost its biggest race of the year, the Peterborough Chase, last month due to the flooding. Now, the racecourse faces a race against time to be ready for its next fixture scheduled for Friday week.

Grounds Crew Facing Difficulties

The grounds crew at Huntingdon racecourse has been facing an uphill battle amid the relentless storms. The track has been underwater since the Peterborough Chase cancellation, and it will likely be some time before the beloved venue can host racing again.

Flooding Levels Remain High

According to the government website, the flooding levels in the area surrounding Huntingdon racecourse remain "high," with levels more than a meter above normal. The situation is dire, and it will require significant efforts to restore the racecourse to its former glory.

Previous Cancellations and Notable Winners

This is not the first time the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase has been canceled due to flooding. In fact, it is the second cancellation in three years. The prestigious race has seen legendary winners in the past, including Gold Cup champion Best Mate in 2002. Other notable winners include Champion Chase hero Edredon Bleu, Supreme Novices' Hurdle champ Al Ferof, and former Arkle winner Remittance Man.

History of Flooding at Huntingdon

Huntingdon racecourse has a history of flooding, with significant damage to the grandstand and surrounding buildings in 2020. Clerk of the course, Roderick Duncan, explained the extent of the flooding they have endured, noting that the entire lawns in front of the grandstand and the members car park are underwater. Thankfully, the water did not reach the buildings, stopping just a few inches short.

Racing Cancelled and Uncertain Future

Racing at Huntingdon was scheduled for today but had to be canceled due to the ongoing flooding. Officials are hopeful that the track will clear in time for the Chatteris Fen raceday on Friday week, but with over 300 flood warnings in England alone, it will take a minor miracle for the course to be raceable again in time.

Similar Situation at Worcester Racecourse

Worcester racecourse also finds itself in a similar predicament, with the River Severn causing significant flooding. Photos show kayakers paddling down the home straight, highlighting the severity of the situation.
