Frankie Dettori: Sir Michael hated it when I kissed him but I didn’t care… we had won the St Leger

I’VE only heard good things about Haskoy who I will ride in the St Leger on Saturday.

I love the Leger — it’s the oldest Classic in the land and you get a real sense of history and tradition when you are at the track.

Dettori kisses Sir Michael after their memorable St Leger win in 2008

Classic Cliche was my first winner of the race back in 1995 for my good friend Saaed Bin Suroor.

I was 24 and we won easily. It was a great moment. Winning any Classic is amazing but there is just something about the Leger.

The win on Classic Cliche was a milestone for me as it was also my 1,000th winner. Thankfully there have been a few more since!

I won it next year on Shantou too. That was a special one as it was also a first Classic win for the boss John Gosden.

Conduit’s win in 2008 was great as it was for Sir Michael Stoute.

It was my fifth win in the race and it ended Sir Michael’s hoodoo.

Up to then he’d had 25 runners without winning so I was really happy to win it for him.

After the race I asked Sir Michael ‘can I have a hug and a kiss?’. I remember him saying: “No, I don’t want to do it in public, I’m not Italian!’

I gave him one anyway . . . but I’m not sure he appreciated it!

Logician in 2019 was another one for John and I.

He was a proper good horse on his day and it was nice and straightforward — just the way I like my Classic winners.

As I say, Haskoy is a lovely ride to pick up in the Leger. She has been supplemented to run in it and I know Ralph Beckett likes her.

She is a daughter of Golden Horn who, of course, is one of my all-time favourite horses.

Haskoy will have to improve a lot but she is going the right way and fillies can improve quickly.

She was a seven-length winner on debut at Wolverhampton in July and then won the Listed Galtres Stakes at York last month.

There is nothing better than riding a Juddmonte-bred filly.

She is two from two and Ryan Moore, who rode her at York, liked her.

I have two rides today starting with MO CELITA (4.10).

He ran pretty well when I rode him last time, finishing sixth in a Listed race over six furlongs at Newmarket.

He has got speed and has some very solid form over five furlongs, so the drop back in trip could help.

I’ve then got FOREST FALCON (5.20). I won on him at Goodwood and he did it well.

The rise in the weights makes things a bit trickier, but he’s got a good chance.

We’ve also got the Legends race today which will be a lot of fun.

A few of my old muckers are riding in it and it will be great to see them back in the saddle.

Maybe I will ride in the race one day — but you have to retire first!
