From Fake Gucci to Real Success: The Rise of Top Horse Handler Charlie Appleby

From Head Lad to No.1 Trainer

Celebrating his ten-year trainer-versary, Charlie Appleby's journey to the top of the horse racing world has been nothing short of remarkable. Starting as a head lad, Appleby worked his way up the ladder to become the trainer of over 150 horses for Godolphin, the prestigious racing stable backed by a multi-billionaire.

A Burning Desire for Success

Appleby's career wasn't always glamorous. In a recent interview, he revealed that he used to turn up to work wearing fake Gucci shoes in an attempt to look the part. But beneath the surface, there was a burning desire to make it to the very top. This desire, combined with his approachability and willingness to take on any task, propelled him forward in his career.

A Team Effort

Appleby attributes his success not only to his own determination but also to the support of his fellow workmates. He acknowledges the importance of mucking in and appreciates the contributions of those around him. It's a team effort that has propelled him to where he is today.

From Scandal to Success

In 2013, Appleby took over as trainer for the Ruler of Dubai after the disgraced Mahmood Al Zarooni was banned for doping violations. Since then, Appleby has led Godolphin to global success, with earnings reaching millions of pounds. His globe-trotting success has taken him from California to Newmarket to Dubai.

Trainer's Championship and Record Earnings

While the millions have rolled in for Appleby, it's the earnings on the track that truly count. In 2021, he clinched his first champion trainer title, thanks in part to the incredible success of Derby hero Adayar. Appleby's total earnings that season exceeded £6 million, his highest ever.

Continuing Success and Real Gucci Shoes

Although this year has been quieter for Appleby and Godolphin due to the retirement of top runners like Adayar, they have still managed to earn over £2 million on the track. And now, with his success, Appleby can finally afford a pair of real Gucci shoes – a symbol of just how far he's come from his early days in knock-off designer gear.
