Man City Academy Graduate Finds Unlikely Success as Jockey in the US

Local Pub Chat Changes Man City's Academy Player's Life

Gavin Ashton, a former Manchester City academy player, had his life turned upside-down after a chance encounter in a local pub. While enjoying a pint alone, Ashton was interrupted by the pub owner who suggested he should become a jockey. Fast forward to today, and Ashton has earned a whopping £250,000 this year as a jockey in the US.

A Journey From Football to Horse Racing

Ashton, who always dreamed of being a sportsman, began his journey as a trainee at the Etihad Campus. However, his football career wasn't meant to be. It was the chat at the pub that sent him down the perfect path. Ashton recalls, "The owner of the pub said 'you could do that, Gavin, you would make a good jockey – you’re the right height'. I told him I would give it a go if I knew how to get into it. And the rest, as they say, is history."

From British Racing School to the US

Ashton started his racing journey at the British Racing School before joining the prestigious Sir Mark Prescott yard. After obtaining his jockey's license, Ashton achieved early success with three wins out of his first five mounts. However, his journey took him to Germany before finally landing him in the US, where he currently rides at Colonial Downs in Virginia.

America: The Land of Opportunity

Ashton has fallen in love with America and the opportunities it offers. With the significant difference in prize money compared to Europe, his decision to move has paid off. Ashton shared, "I understood that I couldn't just come over here and make it. If I worked hard enough, I knew I could achieve my goals. America is meant to be the land of opportunity, after all."

An Exciting Future Ahead

Ashton primarily rides for trainer Karen Dennehy Godsey, who speaks highly of him. She praised his attitude, care for the horses, and his heart and determination when riding. At only 26 years old, Ashton's future as a jockey looks promising. After the Colonial Downs meet concludes on September 9, he is likely to head down to Kentucky Downs. The sky is still the limit for this former chef turned successful jockey.
