Huge shock as 200-1 outsider Astapor storms to win at Hamilton with one lucky punter having £3 on at mammoth 1000-1

ASTAPOR caused one of the biggest shocks in recent racing history as he stormed to victory in the 6f novice stakes at Hamilton.

The 43-rated maiden came in as a rank outsider, with bookies pricing him at 200-1 at the start of the race.

However, one lucky punter claimed to have placed a bet when the horse’s odds were up at 1000-1 on the exchange.

The £3 bet won punter Joe Sillett a cool £3,000 profit, as he profited greatly from the shock result.

The horse trained by John Riches, from Lancashire, quickly established a lead, while being ridden by Harry Russell.

Parisiac was heavily favoured for the win in the 2.01 at Hamilton, with bookies pricing the horse as low as 8/15.

However, the red-hot favourite could only manage second place, as Astapor ran away with the win.

Astapor’s trainer Riches was delighted when talking to Racing Post, where he said: “It wasn’t a shock as such, as I knew if he could lie up with them he would keep going. Me and my wife were jumping all over and saying ‘go on, go on!”.

Jockey Russell told Racing TV: “It’s one of them things, it’s racing. To be fair to Mr Richards he said he’s a horse with plenty of speed”

“He travelled well and I never felt I was in any danger. He’s gone away and won nicely.”

Social media was full of surprise at the result, with few tipping the outsider to cause any sort of impact at the front.

One user tweeted: “I doubt anyone other than the owners or someone who thought the colours were pretty or had a Aunty Astapor bet on it”

Another claimed: “One for the Game of Thrones fans – Astapor wins at 200-1!” with the horse’s name also being the name of a city in the hit series.
