Punter banned from racing for relentless online abuse of jockeys and trainers

A punter named Michael Wheble has been indefinitely banned from racing after subjecting jockeys and trainers to a relentless barrage of online abuse. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) issued the ban, which is the second of its kind, after taking action against another individual, Adam Fowles, last year.

Code of conduct violation

Wheble's Twitter account, under the same name, was used to harass jockeys and trainers, including prominent figures such as Paul Nicholls, Hollie Doyle, and even Carol Vorderman. The BHA deemed his tweets to be a breach of their code of conduct for social media use.

Commitment to integrity

In a statement, a spokesperson for the BHA said, "The BHA is committed to protecting the integrity of horseracing and considers the health and welfare of the sport's participants a priority. The code of conduct, which forms part of the rules of racing, establishes a set of standards aimed at protecting the values of the sport and creating a culture of respect."

Disciplinary action

The BHA expects everyone involved in horseracing to uphold these standards, both in person and online. Individuals who fail to do so may face disciplinary action. In Wheble's case, he was found to have breached the code due to his unacceptable use of social media, resulting in his exclusion from the sport.

Contacting the BHA

The BHA encourages individuals who have been affected by inappropriate behavior on social media to reach out to them. They can be contacted via [email protected] or through their anonymous online reporting service, RaceWISE. If a case has been reported to the police, the BHA will work with them and the relevant industry body to support any action taken.

End of online activity

Wheble's Twitter account has shown no activity since April 11 of this year. Prior to that, he regularly posted messages accusing trainers of "diabolical runs" and calling jockeys "absolutely useless."
