Racehorse Sold for £100,000 Banned After Failed Drugs Test

Grand National-Winning Trainer Buys Drug Scandal Horse

A racehorse purchased by a Grand National-winning trainer for £100,000 has been banned from running after failing a drugs test. Lucinda Russell bought Flemensface at the Cheltenham April sale before the shocking positive test came to light.

Sold Horse Returned to Ireland

Lucinda Russell was forced to return Flemensface to Ireland after the failed drugs test was discovered. Tattersalls, the auctioneer, stepped in to nullify the sale of the six-year-old.

Trainer Fined and Banned

Alan Ahern, who trained Flemensface when he won a Knockanohill point, was aware of the positive drug test three weeks before the horse was sold. Ahern was fined €1,250 and banned for six months by the IHRB (Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board).

Concerns and Lack of Confidence

Russell's assistant trainer and partner Peter Scudamore expressed concern over the incident and questioned the Irish market. He highlighted the potential consequences if something had gone wrong with Flemensface after his purchase, such as injury or death. Scudamore also raised doubts about future purchases from Ireland.

Success and Glory for Russell

Last season, Lucinda Russell achieved a career-best tally of 71 winners. Her stable star, Corach Rambler, won the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National in April. She also secured her fourth Grade 1 victory with Apple Away during the same month.
