Racing Cancelled Moments Before First Race
Racing has been abandoned at Fakenham Racecourse just seconds before the first race was set to begin. The cancellation was due to concerns over accessibility issues, specifically the inability of the ambulance to navigate certain parts of the course.
Concerns over Accessibility
The decision to cancel the races was made after Racing TV presenters received word of concerns over accessibility at the Norfolk venue. An ambulance must be present for every race, and if it cannot access certain areas of the course, the race cannot take place.
Delays Caused by Stuck Ambulance
During the live broadcast, presenter Dan Barber explained that the delay was a result of the ambulance repeatedly getting stuck. The packed stand was shown on camera, indicating the disappointment felt by all involved.
Official Statement and Cancellation
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) released an official statement, announcing that a stewards' inquiry was being held at Fakenham Racecourse. The inquiry was prompted by concerns raised by the Medical Team regarding their ability to access certain parts of the course to provide medical assistance. Shortly after the statement, it was confirmed that the entire seven-race card had been cancelled.
Slippery Ground and Future Rain
Clerk of the course David Hunter explained that the decision to cancel the races was based on the slippery ground caused by rain. The medical team was concerned that they would not be able to reach a jockey in need of assistance within the required time. Hunter expressed regret and apologized to all those who had arrived at the racecourse, promising a full refund.
Disappointment and Social Media Reaction
Racing punters expressed their shock and frustration on social media, with many calling the situation a "shambles." Some questioned why the accessibility issues were not addressed prior to the meeting. This is not the first time Fakenham has had to abandon a card due to weather-related issues.
