Superstar Stradivarius bounces back to winning ways in thrilling Lonsdale Cup victory as Frankie Dettori chokes up

STAYING star Stradivarius pulled on Frankie Dettori’s heartstrings as the pair bounced back to winning ways.

The Italian rider welled-up as the seven-year-old outgunned Spanish Mission in a thrilling Lonsdale Cup.

John and Thady Gosden’s star had been beaten on four of his last five starts but proved he could still be the king.

With Trueshan a big non-runner, only four went to post.

And it became a two-horse race down the long York straight with Dettori and Will Buick doing battle.

It was Dettori at his best as he guided Stradivarius past Andrew Balding’s horse in the shadow of the post.

The crowd roared him home and Dettori struggled to compose himself in the post-race interview.

An emotional Dettori said: “That was some battle!

“He past me, I went past, he past me, and he just knows where the line is and pops his head in front on the line.

“He’s getting older and wiser so I don’t think you’ll see him winning by far these days.

“He’s an amazing little horse. I was nearly choking up when he got that amazing reception.

“It’s not his first rodeo, he knows what to do. He’s just a joy to ride, I love him so much.

“It’s a special track and it’s been kind to me recently.”
