Teen Jockey Pays Tribute to Late Mum After Exeter Win, Set for Biggest Ride at Cheltenham

Teenage Jockey Freddie Gingell

Seventeen-year-old jockey Freddie Gingell paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mother after winning a race at Exeter last week. Gingell, who tragically lost his mother to cancer in 2020, will now head to Cheltenham for a major ride in one of the most prestigious jump races of the winter.

Winning the Haldon Gold Cup

Gingell won the Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup riding Elixir Du Nutz for his uncle, trainer Joe Tizzard. After the victory, he looked to the heavens and said, "She would be proud."

Impressing Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls

Gingell has caught the attention of champion trainer Paul Nicholls, who has been giving him riding opportunities over the past year. And this Saturday, Nicholls will give him the leg up on Il Ridoto, an 8-1 shot for the £160,000 Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Cheltenham's Prestigious Handicap Race

The Paddy Power Gold Cup is one of the biggest handicaps of the season, ranking just behind the Grand National and Coral Gold Cup in terms of significance.

Gingell's Thoughts on the Race

Gingell expressed his excitement about riding Il Ridoto at Cheltenham, saying, "He is a good honest horse and he will give me a real good spin around Cheltenham." He also mentioned that Nicholls has another contender in the race, Stage Star.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

Gingell feels optimistic about his chances, as he believes Il Ridoto has a massive chance in the race due to his low handicap and Gingell's claim off his back. The young jockey is grateful for the opportunity and hopes to reward the owners and Nicholls with a strong performance.

A Bright Future

Despite facing difficulties in the past few years, Gingell is now feeling positive about his career. He is especially thankful for his dad's support and is excited about the progress he's making. While he's currently on a high, Gingell anticipates the nerves will kick in closer to race day.

As always, remember to gamble responsibly.
