Watch drama at Kempton as horse throws away lead with race at mercy before stunning 999-1 winner at the Curragh

THE 3.00 from Kempton on Monday afternoon will surely be used during an episode of A Question Of Sport down the line.

Jockey Nico De Boinville won’t be a happy viewer however.

Versatility approached the last with a clear lead

He and Versatility looked to have the race at their mercy before they suddenly didn’t.

The pair cleared the last fence and soon hit 1.01 in running on the Betfair Exchanges.

A total of £10,000 was placed on Nicky Henderson’s horse at those eye-wateringly short odds and those punters will be cursing their luck.

Despite getting over the fence, the horse lost his momentum and soon jinked, pulling his head to the floor.

De Boinville had no chance and from nowhere their race was over.

Charlie Todd and Psychedelic Rock couldn’t believe their luck and in a matter of seconds they went from a well-beaten second, to a cosy 6-1 winner.

It wasn’t the only dramatic finish of the afternoon either.

Soon the Curragh got in on the act as Pretty Rebel flew home at 999-1 in-running after he blew the start.

One lucky punter managed to get £2 on at that whopping price.

The horse completely missed the break and fell out of the stalls in the 4.55 Apprentice Handicap.

That normally spells the end of your chance, especially over seven furlongs, but jockey Dean Curran had his lucky pants on and timed his late run well enough to move into contention.

In the final furlong they hit the front and even the commentator could not believe what he saw.

“Astonishingly it’s Pretty Rebel who blew the start who is getting up,” he cried.
