Hi, what are you looking for?

Horse Racing

We run you through the contenders next in line for the famous job in the green and gold silks of JP McManus

WHETHER JP McManus knew Geraghty was about to call it a day, or not, the Jumps king has a big call to make.

The logical step would be to install a top rider in both Britain and Ireland.

Who will be getting the all important phone call from McManus?

But that may cause a few headaches and unneeded gossip at the big Festivals.

So who is line to take over Geraghty’s green and gold gig?

Mark Walsh

The Irish star has been waiting in the wings for what seems years and is arguably the natural heir to the throne.

The 34-year-old may not get the headlines that some do, but boy can he ride.

In the past few seasons he has gained plenty of experience on the big stage and has stepped in for Geraghty when injury struck.

An Irish Gold Cup in 2016 set him on his way, with a Champion Hurdle on Espoir D’Allen and big wins on Unowhatimeanharry, Champ and Sir Erec sure to have caught the eye of the boss.

Aidan Coleman

The former Champion Conditional Might just be more flexible than some to take this gig.

He rode Epatante last season before her Champion Hurdle win and has plenty of big race experience on the likes of Paisley Park.

The pressure of this job would be a new test, but one you think he could handle.

He plays his hand well with the press and has plenty of connections over in Ireland too.

Jonjo O’Neill Jr

Son of top trainer of the same name, this 22-year-old has shot into the big time in a flash.

He might just lack the experience to take this job on right now. Had Geraghty continued for a couple more years, he would have been in with a huge chance.

But, who says you can’t win anything with kids…

DARK HORSES

Richard Johnson

As reliable as they come. Longevity may be the issue and JP may be in the same position in a seasons time.

Brian Hughes

Last year’s Champ showed he is more than capable on the big stage. Probably more open to offers than some.

Nico De Boinville

Has the link with Nicky Henderson and would be familiar with the likes of Champ and Epatante. But his true loyalties may lie elsewhere.

Sam Twiston-Davies

Has ridden plenty of big winners over the years. Trusty pair of hands and would love to bounce back into one of the biggest jobs in the game.
