What will the new fixture list mean for jockeys? Will they be in favour? PJA consultation set to decide in coming weeks

WITH less meetings but longer cards here to stay, what does it mean for those in the saddle?

Restrictions have been brought in meaning jockeys can only ride at one meeting a day since the sport resumed.

It’s a change for those used to hairing up and down motorways for rides across the country, but it has been widely supported by riders on the Flat and has given opportunities to riders who might not normally get them.

But with the move set to be brought in for the foreseeable future the PJA is set to fully consult its members in the coming weeks.

Jump jockeys are unlikely to support nine or ten race cards, while some on the Flat will be hoping this rule isn’t brought in again next season.

Leading jockey Tom Marquand said: “I’m very much of the opinion that it’s a great move so long as the eight, nine or ten race cards continue. I see no reason why that can’t happen.

“Surely that makes it easier for racecourses as they can hold less fixtures each year, saving costs and making it easier for staff.

“There’s less travel involved for riders and stable staff.

“It’s taken something like this to bring it to attention, but trainers and owners are going to get better feedback and why not sit up and think how can we benefit from what’s gone on and this may be one of the things and a lesson learnt?

“For me it’s been great, but from an unselfish point of view it gives jockeys who don’t normally get a chance to ride for certain trainers just that.

“I see no reason why it’s unfair to anyone.”
