Emma Raducanu Makes Triumphant Return from Injury with Gutsy Win

Former British No1 Overcomes Romanian Qualifier in ASB Classic

Emma Raducanu marked her comeback from injury with an impressive three-set victory over Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland. This was Raducanu's first match since April, following surgeries on both her wrists and one ankle. Despite a tough fightback from Ruse, Raducanu held her nerve to win 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. She will now face second seed Elina Svitolina in the last-16.

Raducanu Feeling "Reborn" and Ready for Australian Open

After dropping to 301st in the world rankings, Raducanu expressed feeling rejuvenated and freed from the pressure of her headline-making victory at the US Open in 2021. With only nine matches under her belt in 2023, Raducanu showed little rustiness as she secured the first set in just 37 minutes, capitalizing on her third break point in game eight.

A Tough Battle and a Decider

However, Ruse fought back in the second set, saving three break points in an intense 11-minute opening game. She went on to win two of Raducanu's next three service games, shifting the momentum in her favor. Raducanu showed resilience by bringing the match to a decider, but failed to hold serve, leading to a nail-biting finish.

Raducanu's Determination Shines Through

Despite blowing a 5-2 lead in the final set and missing two match points on Ruse's serve, Raducanu refused to give up. The 21-year-old showcased moments of brilliance, including a stunning backhand slice winner. Her hard work and determination paid off as she secured an encouraging comeback victory after eight months on the sidelines.

Raducanu's Gratitude and Optimism

Speaking after the match, Raducanu expressed her gratitude for her return to the court and her improved health. She acknowledged the difficulties of her long hiatus but emphasized her excitement to continue the season injury-free and healthy.

Next Challenge: Facing Elina Svitolina

Raducanu's journey continues as she prepares to take on Ukrainian No.2 seed Elina Svitolina, who reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last summer. The world No.301 is also waiting to hear if she will earn a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open, which begins on January 14. If not, she will have to navigate three qualifying rounds next week.
